The gap between knowing and doing
You know you should be more food-independent.
You’ve looked at your backyard and done the mental math. You’ve bought a book or two. You’ve watched videos. You’ve pinned things. But there’s a gap between “I know I want to do this” and “here’s what I’m doing Tuesday morning.”
That gap has a name. It’s the place where good intentions meet a wall of scattered information, seasonal overwhelm, and the quiet suspicion that you’re doing it wrong.
It’s not a motivation problem. It’s a system problem.
You don’t need more inspiration. You need a sequence. What to plant, what to preserve, when to do it, and how to build toward a pantry that can carry your family through a hard month.
That’s what this course is.
15 years. Here’s the systematic version.
After 15 years of homesteading on 0.3 acres in a suburban neighborhood, I built this course because I needed it to exist and it didn’t.
I made every expensive mistake. Planted the wrong things in the wrong order. Canned produce I should have fermented. Lost a full season’s harvest because I didn’t know the timing. Spent money on gear before I understood the basics.
What I have now is a system. Not a philosophy. Not an inspiration board. A sequence that produces 90 days of food from a suburban backyard when you run it right.
This course is that sequence, organized for the person who has time on weekends and a backyard that’s already waiting.
What’s inside — Course Modules
Module 1 — Backyard Assessment and Planning
Map what you actually have — grow zone, square footage, sun exposure, water access. By the end of this module, you have a specific planting plan for your yard, not a generic template.
Week 2 — The 90-Day Pantry Framework
The math behind 90 days of food security. What to grow, what to buy, how to rotate. You’ll build your own pantry inventory framework in this module.
Module 3 — The Five Starter Crops
The five highest-yield, lowest-effort crops that consistently fill a suburban pantry. Why these five. How to grow them. What to do with them at harvest.
Lesson 4 — Preservation Basics (Canning, Fermenting, Freezing)
The right preservation method for each crop. No equipment overwhelm. You start with what you have and add as the harvests come in.
Module 5 — Seasonal Rhythm and Timing
The most expensive mistake backyard growers make is ignoring timing. This module gives you a 12-month calendar specific to your grow zone.
Module 6 — Building the Pantry Over 90 Days
Week-by-week. What to do, what to check, what to harvest and preserve. The 90-day sequence that takes you from planning to a stocked pantry.
Bonus — The Pantry Audit Worksheet
A printable tool for tracking what you have, what you need, and what’s next.
Who this was built for
This course was built for the person who has a backyard and a grocery budget and wants to close the gap between those two things.
Specifically, you’ve been growing something. Maybe a raised bed, maybe containers on a patio, maybe a small plot you’ve been figuring out season by season. You’re not a beginner who has never touched soil. But you haven’t had a system. You’ve had enthusiasm and some results and a lot of seasons that didn’t go quite as planned.
If you have a backyard, grow zone 4 through 9, and are willing to work through a module a week, this course was built for you.
If you’re looking for a fully self-sufficient homestead curriculum, this isn’t it. This is suburban-scale, backyard-focused, practical for the person who has a day job and a family and 2 to 3 hours on a weekend morning.
About this founding cohort
This is a founding cohort course.
You’ll be among the first people to take it. There are no testimonials yet because the course is new.
Here’s what I know about it — every module in this course is built from what I actually did in 15 years of suburban homesteading. Not from theory, not from what the books say, but from the specific decisions I made on a 0.3-acre lot with a day job and a family. The mistakes are in here too. I know what went wrong and why, and I’ve built the system around those specific failures.
The founding cohort gets the course, direct access to me for questions, and the first look at what’s coming next. When testimonials exist, they’ll be real ones from real people. Not pulled from a launch.
Frequently asked questions
Is this for complete beginners?
This course works best if you’ve already grown something, even one season in a raised bed. Complete beginners will get value from it but may want to start with the free Backyard Pantry Starter Kit first and use the course as your next step once you’ve had one season under your belt.
What do I need to start?
A backyard with at least 100 square feet of growing space (raised beds count), your grow zone number (you can look this up in two minutes), and a way to take notes. No special equipment required for Modules 1 through 3. Module 4 covers preservation equipment and starts you with what you already have.
How long does it take?
Plan for 90 days if you work through one module per two weeks and run one growing season while you learn. You can consume all the video content in a weekend. The system takes a full season to run.
Does this work for small spaces or apartments?
The course is designed for backyards. Container gardening on a patio is possible for some modules, but the 90-day pantry target requires enough growing space to produce meaningful yield. If you’re in an apartment, the free lead magnet is a better starting point and the course will be more relevant once you have outdoor space.
Is there a community or support?
You get direct access to me for questions during the founding cohort period. The longer-term community lives in the THM membership. Course completers get an invitation to join. More on that when you finish.
What’s your refund policy?
30-day money-back guarantee. If you go through the course and it’s not the right fit, email me within 30 days and I’ll refund you. No hoop-jumping.
