About The Homestead Movement
I’m Joshua. I built The Homestead Movement because I got tired of homesteading content that was either unrealistic, fear-based, or trying to sell me a $3,000 course before teaching me anything useful.
The Backstory
I didn’t grow up on a farm. I didn’t have a grandparent who taught me to can tomatoes or split wood. Everything I know, I learned the hard way – by doing it wrong first, then figuring out what actually works.
What I Learned the Hard Way
I made every mistake you’re about to make.
Those mistakes taught me something that most homesteading content gets wrong: this isn’t about going off-grid tomorrow. It’s about building practical skills, one at a time, wherever you are right now – a balcony, a backyard, a few acres.
Nobody needs 40 acres and a tractor to start. Most people need a raised bed, a water filter, and a plan.
Why This Site Exists
The Homestead Movement exists because I couldn’t find what I was looking for when I started: a place that gives real cost breakdowns, honest product recommendations, step-by-step guides that assume you’re starting from zero, and no pressure to buy land you can’t afford or quit a job you still need.
Every guide on this site is built to be specific and practical. If I recommend a product, I tell you exactly why – and how much it actually costs. If a topic has a cheaper alternative, I’ll tell you that too. The goal is to help you make informed decisions, not to sell you on a fantasy.
No hype. No fear-mongering. No gatekeeping.
Too much homesteading content relies on either “the world is ending, buy my survival kit” or “look at my perfect farm aesthetic.” Neither of those helps you learn anything.
Real costs, every time.
If a chicken coop costs $800 to build and $200 a year to maintain, I’ll say that – not “raising chickens is basically free.” You deserve accurate numbers before you commit time and money.
Start where you are.
You don’t need land to start homesteading. You need information, a plan, and the willingness to learn skills that most people have forgotten. That’s what this site is for.
What You’ll Find Here
Over 80 in-depth guides covering the full spectrum of modern homesteading: backyard chickens, emergency preparedness, food preservation, off-grid solar, homestead gardening, land buying, urban homesteading, and honest gear reviews.
Every post is research-backed and written for people who are actually going to do this — not just pin it and forget about it.
I also built free interactive tools – a homestead cost calculator, a bug-out readiness score, and a growing zone finder – because the best content meets you where you are and helps you take the next step.
A Note on Trust
Some links on this site are affiliate links. That means if you buy something through one of my recommendations, I earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. I only recommend products I’d tell a friend to buy. If something isn’t worth your money, it won’t appear on this site – regardless of the commission. Full affiliate disclosure here.
